The Ebb and Flow: When Leadership Meets Mystery

SHARE

Not just about change—a question of adaptability and stewardship.

When reflecting on my experiences, I, on rare occasions, distill my learnings into a poem. I believe poetry allows a writer to share their thoughts and feelings with others without imposing a specific interpretation. It invites readers to reflect on their own experiences and share their perspectives, enriching the writer’s own understanding.

For me, the muse to write a poem can be elusive, sometimes appearing only once a year.

The Ebb and Flow
It’s unclear how it works. A mystery, this one. One day it works. The next, it doesn’t. It humbles the proud and confuses the know-it-all. But it rewards the learner—and the willing enjoys its fruits.

In the ebb and flow, it’s here today—waking up the butterfly within to spread its wings and fly, to display its beauty on high. It’s gone tomorrow—waking up the raging tempest within to clip the wings that once did fly and dim the beauty that was once on high.

Show it the right way. Feed it the right bread. Give it the right life. Only then will the mystery unravel. Then we will know how it works—and then it will always serve us well.

The lesson?

Leadership and stewardship live in the ebb and flow. Markets shift. Teams change. Seasons turn. Sometimes success feels effortless; other times, it demands resilience and recalibration. The question isn’t whether change will come—it’s how we respond when it does.

Here’s the real question:
Are we clinging to yesterday’s methods when today calls for new thinking? Are we resisting the flow instead of learning from it? How will adaptability shape the way we set goals, lead teams, and steward opportunities?

Call to Action:
Take a moment today. Identify one area—strategy, project, or relationship—where you need to adapt. Write down one change you’ll make this week. Adaptability won’t weaken your leadership; it will strengthen it for what’s ahead.
