Case Study
Kenya – Social Enterprise Policy Reform and Inclusive Sector Development
Context
The Kenya intervention focused on updating the draft Social Enterprise Policy and strengthening the capacity of the Social Enterprise Society of Kenya (SESOK) to advocate for policy adoption and support its members. This was critical to mainstreaming social enterprise within national policy frameworks and enabling sustainable growth for a sector that plays a pivotal role in Kenya’s economic development.
How we did it
- Supported SESOK to update the draft Social Enterprise Policy through a Public-Private Dialogue process.
- Produced a final draft policy and action plan, shared with the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise.
- Developed a resource mobilisation framework and delivered capacity-building trainings to strengthen SESOK’s institutional sustainability.
Outcomes
- SESOK leveraged its improved capacity to engage stakeholders, host awareness workshops, and become an implementing partner in the EU-funded BusinESS OI Project.
- The intervention contributed to women and youth empowerment, as many social enterprises in Kenya are led by or serve these groups.
- SESOK is now positioned as a key actor in national policy advocacy and inclusive sector development.
