Seek Before You Act: Leadership Beyond Logic

Numbers matter, but direction matters more. Fresh wisdom for every new season.

We’re having review meetings. We’re doing lessons-learned exercises. We’re reflecting—personally and professionally. The goal? To identify what worked well, what didn’t, and where improvement is needed so we can draw up strategies for the season ahead. Because rightly so, strategies matter.

And here’s the logic:
If a strategy worked, why discard it? If the goal remains the same, why change the approach? Logic says reuse what worked—but leadership calls for more than logic.

David understood this. When the Philistines attacked again, logic suggested reusing the same battle plan that had worked before. Yet David didn’t assume—he inquired of God. Even when a strategy proved effective, he sought fresh direction (2 Samuel 5:19–25).

That’s what planning should look like in spaces that shape our work and influence—where numbers matter, but direction matters more. We review the data, and we analyse the trends—but we also pause to seek the One who knows the season ahead. Because yesterday’s success doesn’t guarantee tomorrow’s victory.

So, here’s the question:
Are we carrying forward strategies because they still serve the goal—or simply because we’ve stopped seeking fresh direction for a new season? Are we assuming that yesterday’s success guarantees tomorrow’s victory—or pausing to seek fresh wisdom before we act? And as leaders, are we modelling what it means to seek before we act—or letting past wins dictate future moves? What strategy will you carry forward into the next season—and are you inquiring again from the Lord before you move?

Call to Action:
Before you act, take time to inquire. Ask: Is this approach still right for the season ahead? Seek fresh wisdom—because leadership isn’t just about repeating what worked; it’s about discerning what’s next. Seek wisdom. Because the next season may whisper for a shift—even when the previous approach seemed flawless.
